What’s that on your upper eye? That my friend, is a condition called blepharitis.
Blepharitis is a common eye condition that causes the eyelids to be red, swollen, irritated, and itchy. It can leave your eyelashes with dandruff-like crusty flakes. This condition can be excruciatingly painful. It is not contagious, however, and usually does not cause long-term damage to your eyes.
The main cause of eyelid inflammation cannot always be determined, various factors may increase your risk of blepharitis. If you also have dandruff on your scalp or brows, you may be at a higher risk. It is also possible to have an allergic reaction to makeup or other cosmetic products used around the eyes, resulting in eyelid inflammation.
Blepharitis symptoms include:
- The sensation that something is in your eye
- Burning or stinging eyes
- Runny eyes
- Dry, itchy eyes
- Light sensitivity
- Red and swollen eyes or eyelids
- Foamy tears or tears with small bubbles
- Dry eyes
- You experience crusty eyelids or eyelashes when you wake up
Although blepharitis is usually not serious, it can lead to a number of complications. Many people with this condition develop dry eye syndrome, a condition in which the eyes do not produce enough tears or dry out too quickly. This can result in dry, gritty, or irritated eyes.
Serious sight-threatening issues are uncommon, especially if any complications that arise are identified and treated as soon as possible.
